Understanding ND Filters for Drone Video

ND filters, or Neutral Density filters, reduce the amount of light entering a drone camera lens without changing the color of the image. They are especially useful for video because they help control shutter speed and create smoother, more natural-looking motion.

ND4

Blocks a small amount of light. Best for cloudy or slightly bright conditions.

ND8

Good for partly sunny days when the camera needs moderate light reduction.

ND16

A common choice for bright sunny days and general outdoor drone video.

ND32

Used in very bright conditions, such as midday sun, snow, water, or open fields.

Simple rule: the higher the ND number, the darker the filter and the more light it blocks. This allows the drone pilot to use a slower shutter speed for smoother cinematic footage.
